in valparaiso, chile, we kept seeing this really cool grafiti everywhere. finally, i said to ian, "ok, we need to find this guy." ian's reply was, "omm, ok scott, yeah, sure, we'll find him. one grafiti artist in a city of a million people, no problem." so, we went into a cafe, and asked if they knew who he was. "no, he's dangerous and he got arrested, and he's very mysterious." so, we kept on. next cafe, the one we hung in a couple of times. after awhile, we asked the waitress if she knew who el efecto pena was. she immediately blushed, and laughed. it was her boyfriend. he would be coming around within the hour. so, he showed up, and we talked about art, life, philosophy, and love for awhile. we tried to buy him some wine, and he said "No, I never drink or do drugs. Those things cloud the mind and I am the sober hallucinator." i asked him if he was ever going to move to new york, because within a few minutes he just seemed to exude that 'I'm Going To Be Famous' vibe. His reply: "I do not know what this means, this concept of tomorrow. I only know that I am here in Valparaiso today. Tomorrow, I could end up anywhere, I have no idea." These were the kinds of things he said in the conversation. As we said goodbye, I said, "Take Care," and he stopped me and said, "No, no, do not take care, because then you are fearful, and trying to stay safe all the time, and not really living." Ian and I looked at each other, speechless. "Ok then, vaya con dios!" that was all i could think to yell as he took off down the street. anyway, he was an amazing guy, and i hope he is doing well down there. Ian and i both agreed as we talked about him in the time afterwards that he had that Genius-energy about him that you just don't feel emanating from very many people.
