The Rejection Project
One of the true inspirations for the projects on 39forks.com is a collaborative based site created by Portland based artists Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July called: "Learning to Love You More"
This site has garnered much attention, was represented on display at the Whitney Biennial, and they have really put a lot of work into creating some wonderful things. Mr. Fletcher and Ms. July have become pretty famous, and they continue to do wonderful things. I am truly a fan.
On Learning to Love You More, people can accept assignments (all very interesting and unique), make something on their own, and then email their final product. Then Harrell, Miranda and their people post the assignments to the site in a collection, as you can see if you go there.
However, if the assignment is not within the confines of their guidelines, then it gets passed over and is not included on the site. Consequently, this interests me very much. To me, this creates a vast empty space that really ought to be investigated, now. I am just as interested if not moreso in the rejections!
I challenge you to go to Learning to Love You More, find an assignment you like, and create something that is both completing the assignment from your perspective, but at the same time exceeds the strict parameters that have been set.
I myself have done this, and give you the first few examples in the collection, and will do a few more as the months roll by. (Note: you might not get notice that your assignment has been rejected, so send a follow up inquiry email, and then include that to me if you like.)
Have fun, and more importantly, be creative.
